Imagine what would happen if America barged its way into a developing country, buttered up its homicidal dictator and agreed a back-of-the-envelope deal in which he signed over his nation’s mineral wealth in return for roads, railways and sports stadiums. Everyone would benefit, no? No. The problem is that the infrastructure turns out to be worth a hell of a lot less than the minerals. The Obamas will play host to a string of country stars — legendary and contemporary — Monday at their seventh “In Performance at the White House” program. As a musician, I find music touches the soul like nothing else. We are in great turmoil in this great nation and we have a long fight on our hands as people begin to waken and arise. On the final day of the 10th anniversary of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Hazel Dickens, the festival's spiritual leader, stood on the Banjo Stage and told the audience that she thought it wouldn't even make its first anniversary.
